Most paint jobs don’t fail because of the paint — they fail because of the prep. A smooth, clean, well-prepared wall is what makes the difference between a finish that looks flawless for years and one that peels or shows every bump after a few months. Here’s the exact process we follow at Paint Studio before a single drop of paint goes on.
Clear and protect the room
Move furniture to the center and cover it, then lay drop cloths over the floor. Take down switch plates, outlet covers and curtain rods, and loosen light fixtures rather than painting around them. Five minutes of protection now saves an hour of cleanup later.
Clean the walls
Paint won’t bond to dust, grease or grime. Wipe walls down with a sponge and a mild cleaner, paying extra attention to kitchens and hallways where oils and fingerprints build up. Let everything dry fully before moving on.
Repair holes and cracks
Fill nail holes and small cracks with spackle, and use a flexible filler for larger gaps where walls meet trim. For deeper damage:
- Scrape away any loose material.
- Fill in layers rather than one thick pass.
- Let each layer dry before adding the next.
- Smooth the final surface so it sits flush with the wall.
Sand for a smooth surface
Lightly sand filled areas and any glossy or previously painted surfaces. Sanding flattens repairs and gives new paint something to grip. Wipe off the dust with a slightly damp cloth afterward — leftover dust ruins a finish.
Tape the edges
Run painter’s tape along trim, baseboards, ceilings and door frames. Press the edge down firmly with a putty knife so paint can’t bleed underneath. This is what gives you those crisp, professional lines.
Prime when it matters
You don’t always need primer, but you do when you’re:
- Covering bare drywall, plaster or filler.
- Painting over a dark or bold color.
- Dealing with stains, water marks or patchy surfaces.
- Switching from a glossy finish to a matte one.
A coat of primer evens out the surface and helps your color cover in fewer coats.
The result
When the wall is clean, repaired, smooth, taped and primed, painting itself is the easy part — the color goes on evenly and the finish lasts. Skipping prep almost always costs more time and money down the line.
